Who to contact about a customs hold

Contacting the wrong party is the main reason holds take a week. Here is who can actually do something, in order.

Not general carrier support

The first line can see the same tracking status you can and will usually advise you to wait or refer you onward. They cannot see the entry and cannot act on it.

Starting here is not wrong, but treat it as a routing step rather than a resolution attempt, and ask immediately to be directed to brokerage or clearance.

The carrier’s brokerage or clearance team

On a courier parcel entered by the carrier’s in-house broker, this team holds the entry and knows the specific requirement. They are who you need.

They typically operate by email or a dedicated line and work in queues, which means a precise, correctly addressed submission referencing the tracking number gets processed and a vague one does not. Ask for the requirement in writing.

Your own broker, if you have one

If you use an independent broker rather than the carrier’s, they hold the entry and the carrier cannot help you at all. Confirm which applies before spending time on the wrong channel.

For brands importing in bulk to a US 3PL, this is usually the right contact.

Customs directly: almost never

Contacting the customs authority directly about an individual commercial parcel is rarely productive and is not the intended channel. The entry is filed by a broker, and the broker is the party who can amend or support it.

The missing role

Notice that every party in this list is correct for one step and unhelpful for the others, and none of them is tracking your parcel to completion. The customer is, and they are tracking it by emailing you.

The gap is not information, it is ownership: one party that detects the hold, asks the right team, supplies the document, follows up, and tells the customer. At fifty orders a day that role is a real job, which is exactly the job HoldDesk does.

Want this checked against your own numbers?

Not the carrier, who will tell you to contact the broker. Not the broker, who needs a document from you. Not your support agent, who has eleven other tickets. HoldDesk owns it — detection, documents, chasing the brokerage team, and keeping your customer informed until it moves.
